Newcastle, NSW, Australia, Friday 7th December 2013

The inaugural Orica Tag Team Challenge will be held at North Stockton Beach, Newcastle from 1 to 3 February 2013 and will be hosted by Northside Boardriders.

It is set to be one of the richest Tag Team events in Australia next year and will attract many of the top surfboard clubs from around the country to battle it out for a total prize purse of $10,000..

The Orica Tag Team Challenge will present a unique format involving surfboard clubs from around Australia competing against each other in a format where timing is critical and the second wave requires precision judgement. Each team will consist of two juniors and three open surfers.

Event Chief Warren Smith said Surfest organisers are very excited to have the Orica Tag Team Challenge as part of Surfest 2013.

“To have Orica supporting a grassroots surfing event like tag team surfing and the Stockton community will enhance the reputation of Stockton as a vibrant and consistent surfing location while adding significant economic returns for the local economy,” Mr Smith said.

“The Stockton community is a historic beachside village that has consistently produced surfing champions since the 1960’s. Surfers such as Damian Iredale, Mark Tickle, Lucas Gresham and Simon Law honed their surfing on the fast left and right breaking waves along the stretch of Stockton Beach.”

“This makes the Orica Tag Team Challenge a perfect fit for Stockton,” he said.

General Manager of Orica Kooragang Island, Greg Holmes, said the company is delighted to support the event, which will showcase Stockton Beach and benefit the local community.

“Surfest is one of the city’s premier sporting events and I am very pleased we can help provide an opportunity for Stockton to be a part of it.”

Paul Smart Northside Boardriders Club spokesman said, ‘This event is fantastic for Stockton and Northside Boardriders.  We have a long term goal of building our own club house.  Our welcome involvement in the first ever Surfest event to be held on Stockton Beach will go a long way to us getting there.  The fact the contest will have two rounds before eliminations means all clubs will get added opportunities to perform.”
